Imagine, your roommate is sleeping till 10 in morning, you may want to know when he went to bed last night closing his computer. You may also want to keep track of accessing internet through your computer.

You can use event viewer in xp to serve this purpose. Go to Start>run>eventvwr.msc then press Enter.

A window would open. You would see some bizarre description of system logs. You would have to have knowledge about the event id's to understand them. In this case you can to to this site . Enter the event id and source you want explanation.

For example, event id 6006 from source 'eventlog' indicates a shutdown and event id 20158 from source 'Remote Access' indicates establishing a network connection.
