Well, we know that in ubuntu 10.04 LTS, GIMP is absent. But that doesn't mean ubuntu didn't keep any software for editing images.
Meet imageMagick, an excellent software that impressed me the second I came to know about this.
This software is pretty ancient looking, but it knows its job.
I know I know, it can't be compared to GIMP, but give it a try, K?
It provides both graphical and console support. For example, if you want to convert a *.jpg file to *.png file, simply type:

Code:

convert filename.jpg filename.png
The simplicity of ImageMagick Makes it awesome.
To resize an image, simply type
Code:
convert filenamp.jpg -resize 300x400 newfilename.jpg

Again, to show the GUI of ImageMagick, you can simply type
Code:

display
in terminal and it will start imageMagick for you Very Happy

So go ahead. Give it a try.

Also, you can find more about the console command convert from here
