Offline Dictionary in Ubuntu : Efficient usage
Hi there
you might have already noticed that Ubuntu offers a free online dictionary for you. However, you can not use it when you don't have INTERNET, right?
Wrong!!
Now you can use it without Internet after you go through this topic All you need to do is some preference editing and some downloading.
Download the whole dictionary:
open a terminal and type:
it will download approximately 12MB package and automatically install it.
Bonus:
If you also intend to use the thesaurus offline, type this command:
Preference editing:
By default, the dictionary gets word meanings from server. But as we already downloaded it, we don't need any server from internet!! we are going to use our own server.
Open dictionary, by pressing alt+F2 and typing gnome-dictionary. click on run.
after the dictionary is opened, go to edit> preferences.
Click on the add button.
then, make the following settings like in this image:
now, select the newly created source server (i.e. in this case, myserver) then click on close.
Efficient usage:
you can use the dictionary applet to quickly look up words from your panel!
Just right click on panel, click on add to panel, and then add Dictionary applet there:D
enjoy!!
