backup and re-install applications....
many of us are using ubuntu. for various circumstances sometimes it becomes important to re-install the operating system. this makes our all installed and update files over written. so, we have download them again and re install them.i think this is a painful task and if the net speed is slow then it can be time consuming too...
but ubuntu takes care of the problem. only 3 command and couples of minute can solve the problem. all you have to do is open the terminal and follow the commands below.
backup applications:-
sudo apt-get install dpkg-repack fakeroot
mkdir ~/dpkg-repack; cd ~/dpkg-repack
fakeroot -u dpkg-repack `dpkg --get-selections | grep install | cut -f1`
re-install applications:-
change directory and go to the location where the dpkg-repac is kept (ex:- cd /....../dpkg-repac) then give the following command in a terminal-
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
----------------------------------------------
this will create a folder called dpkg-repack in your home folder. in that folder you will find .deb file of all installed applications in your pc. you can move the folder to any location you want.

Re: backup and re-install applications....
whew I did it.. Took a great 855MB size :p
But it is worth it, now.. lets move it to somewhere suitable
Tips to others: you will find the dpkg-repack folder in your home directory
