JMonkey is a Java based game engine. I heard about it at BASIS SeftExpo.
I think many of you will find it interesting.
JMonkey has got two websites. One is open for users. The URL is:
www.jmonkeyengine.org

Here is a tutorial for JMonkey. I have just started to read it and it seems to be good. Check yourself.

I have downloaded the tools(For Linux) required to develop games using JMonkey. The download size is 98MB. IIT guys can take those from me.
The tool is by default integrated to Net Beans and can be integrated to Eclipse.

That looks interesting Very Happy I was wondering what it is when I saw your feed in FB about Jmonkey.

I have a question though.
Generally java desktop apps are considered to be slower compared to programs that directly interact with the system.
Will that slow the game speed down?
I saw some examples, and probably the output is somehow converted to flash. (perhaps). Anyway Very Happy keep us updated, and rep++.

I have the same question too!!
I think it will depend on the size (in term of resource usage) of the game. I mean for big size apps, the slowing down will not be significant I suppose.

I have a very little experience of working with game studio. I did not like that much because it requires a lot of pointer handling as it is built on C. Again, object-oriented approach is much developer-friendly than non-object-oriented one.

Like I said, some demo projects were converted flash. (Maybe JMonkey has that functionality)
In that case, the server would do all the work of processing, thus reducing the possibility of slowing the game down. Not a bad idea actually Very Happy

From another topic, I came to know about Java3D today. It is an API for using OpenGL through Java in OOA. You can try that out I think Very Happy

Very Happy And OOA rocks. It is easier for us because it mimics our real life Very Happy Very Happy

I saw that topic. JMonkey also uses OpenGL in the back. Advantage in JMonkey is that, it implements physics.
